These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your access to and use of vat-scan.com (the "Service"). By using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. The Service

VAT-Scan provides a free interface to query the European Commission's VIES (VAT Information Exchange System) database for validation of EU VAT identification numbers. Results are generated in real time from VIES and returned as-is.

2. No warranty

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT.

Validation results are produced by the VIES system and the underlying national tax databases of EU member states. VAT-Scan has no control over the accuracy, completeness, or availability of those sources. We make no guarantee that results are correct, current, or that the Service will be available at any given time.

3. Not tax or legal advice

Information on this site is provided for general informational purposes only and does not constitute tax, legal, accounting, or professional advice. You should not rely on any content on this site as a substitute for advice from a qualified professional. Before acting on any VAT-related matter, consult a qualified tax adviser licensed in your jurisdiction.

4. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, VAT-Scan and its operators shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages — including lost profits, lost data, or business interruption — arising out of or in connection with your use of the Service, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• Use the Service to violate any law or third-party rights
• Attempt to overload, disrupt, or reverse-engineer the Service
• Submit automated bulk requests without written permission (the VIES upstream has its own rate limits)
• Use the Service to harvest or scrape data for resale

6. Intellectual property

All content on VAT-Scan (excluding data returned from VIES, which belongs to the European Commission and member state authorities) is the property of VAT-Scan or its licensors and is protected by copyright and related laws.

7. Changes

We may modify these Terms at any time. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

8. Governing law

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Portugal, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute arising under these Terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Lisbon, Portugal, subject to any mandatory consumer-protection rights you may have under the law of your country of residence.
